I’m Ruth - Optometrist at On Point Eyecare.
I qualified as an optometrist in the United Kingdom in 1998 and, after a short time in private practice, returned to Cardiff University to work as a research assistant studying vision in children with Down syndrome. During that time, I completed my PhD and met my husband, who grew up in Moranbah. In 2003, I made the move to Mackay, and I’ve proudly called the region home ever since.
Over the past two decades, I’ve had the privilege of caring for local families and building long-term relationships with patients throughout the community. What I value most about practising in Mackay is the opportunity to genuinely connect with people, provide continuity of care, and support better long-term eye health outcomes.
My approach to patient care is thorough, attentive, and personal. I take the time to listen, understand each patient’s concerns, and explain things in a way that feels clear and aligned to the patients needs. I believe good eye care is built on trust, and I want every patient to feel comfortable, informed, and confident in the care they receive.
When you book an appointment with me, you can expect a comprehensive eye examination from someone who genuinely cares, takes the time to listen, and is committed to helping you achieve the best possible outcome for your vision and eye health.

My professional interests have always been closely connected to children's vision and paediatric eye care. Having spent several years researching vision issues in primary school-aged children with Down syndrome early in my career, I naturally developed a passion for working with children and helping families navigate their visual development.
I particularly enjoy the challenge of examining young children and finding creative ways to make eye examinations engaging, effective, and fun.
I also have a strong interest in ocular health. One of the most rewarding aspects of optometry is that a comprehensive eye examination can reveal much more than changes in vision. A patient may come in simply wanting new glasses, but through careful assessment we can sometimes identify eye disease or signs of broader health conditions that require attention. Knowing you've played a role in protecting someone's sight or overall health is incredibly rewarding.
What excites me about being part of On Point Eyecare is the opportunity to work alongside an exceptional team, spend meaningful time with patients, and be part of building something special within the Mackay community.
As an independent practice, we have the freedom to focus on personalised care, offer a thoughtfully curated range of eyewear, and create an experience that truly puts patients first. I'm also looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces from previous areas of practice and continuing to care for local families for many years to come.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with family & friends, embracing the relaxed lifestyle that regional Queensland offers, and involving myself in local sport; particularly netball.
One thing that often surprises people is that I love salsa dancing.
